I’ve been saying for ages we have a sword of Damocles on top of us: the biggest tech. companies out there are running a race to see who brings out a universal translator first.
They have the money, they have the resources, and the motivation. AI and Big Data are there to help them. Developing perfect real-time translators is a step un the ladder in developing better AIs and robots, the same as beating humans at chess games was (and they did).
It’s only a matter of time before gadjets such as the one used in Start Trek to translate instantly and effortlessly from one language to the other are as common as mobile phones.
And history tells us when technology comes into the picture, changes come FAST. Just think back 10 years and how our mobile phones, or Internet have changed.
If you know the enemy and know yourself, you need not fear the result of a hundred battles. If you know yourself but not the enemy, for every victory gained you will also suffer a defeat. If you know neither the enemy nor yourself, you will succumb in every battle.
I like keep up to date with changes regarding TEFL. My bread depends on it. So can make adjustments, adapt and change whenever is needed.
I’ve been trying out AI engines like GPT-3 which can generate texts, write exams and answer questions nearly flawlessly. Like a human.
It can even program in nay programming language just by showing it examples. Awesome.
As some people have said, what used to be science fiction, is now a reality.
And it is being developed daily.
Google Lenses with augmented reality and real-time translator.
