[:en]Once you have your NIE number, and your Social Security number, you are elegible to be hired on a contract. So now let’s get to step three of the necessary paperwork in Spain: the Empadronamiento.
The Empadronamiento is the housing registry in Madrid. You have to inform the local government about where you live, and this gives you access to several benefits such as public health care (the most important one), citizenship and marriage. See? This is like a video game, achieve goals to open new doors 😀
The process is very easy: just fill in a form and hand it in the local Oficina de Empadronamiento. More information here (in Spanish).
Documents you need.
- Solicitud de Empadronamiento. The form you need to hand in.
This link takes you to the form to be used if you are going to give it in at the office.
This link takes you to the form to be used if you want to send it through the post office (mail). - A document to prove your identity (NIE, passport…).
- Proof of residence. They will ask for a recent document to prove you are living there at the moment. It can be the rental contract, or last month’s supplier bill (electricity, water or gas).
Steps to obtain the Empadronamiento.
NB: This is if you are going to go to the office. By mail just send the form to the address on the Solicitud de Empadronamiento.
- Fill in the Solicitud de Empadronamiento (links above).
- Get an appointment.
- Go to the office on the set date and give in the documents.
Once you have done that you will probably be given a Volante de Empadronamiento. But most official institutions will ask for the Certificado de Empadronamiento. What is the difference?
Basically the only legal one is the Certificado de Empadronamiento, which you can obtain from the City Hall offices. It’s the only document that proves where you leave.
The Volante de Empadronamiento is just used for informative purposes and when a Certificado is not needed. You will be requested one or the other depending of each case. Now, in most places, you just have to check a box where you accept the administration to allow to check your address. You can download if from the Internet .
